In accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 ("HSWA") the requirement for Health and Safety Representatives has been legislated. 

A PCBU ("Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking") in New Zealand is required to have a qualified Health and Safety Representative for every 20 staff within their business.

Level One - Introductory Course

The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) prompted a change in the standard of training for Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs).  HSRs will not be able to issue Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) or direct unsafe work to cease if they have not completed the approved WorkSafe New Zealand HSR Transition Training course.

EmploySafeNZ’s Level One Health and Safety Representative Training course enables HSRs to meet the requirements of HSW Act.

Course Aim -

EmploySafeNZ’s Initial Health and Safety Representative Training is designed to introduce HSRs to new concepts, such as PCBU and Officer, and enable them to successfully carry out their responsibilities according to the HSW Act. This training includes group and individual activities used to confirm an understanding of the specific course requirements.

Course Objectives -

This course will enable Health and Safety Representatives to explain the overall role and functions of HSRs in the workplace. HSRs will learn how to act effectively as an advocate for workers. They will identify the responsibilities of a PCBU and WorkSafe New Zealand in reference to their role. They will describe the risk management process and the importance of communicating during the process with both the worker and management. HSRs that successfully complete the course will have the power to issue Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) and direct a worker to cease unsafe work.  They will learn to protect themselves, others in the workplace and as a result you the Business Owner.

Assessment Methods: Written and Oral Quiz, practical simulation and written assessment

Level Two - Advanced Course

This course is currently designed to ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) 2015 and is designed to give relevant knowledge required for all Health and Safety Representatives. 

This course includes group and individual activities used to confirm an understanding of the specific course requirements.

Course Aim -

This course will provide Health and Safety Representatives to promote successful management of Health and Safety issues in your business.

The Health and Safety Representative role includes good faith bargaining and participants learn the skills and knowledge to give constructive input into the on going process for improving health and safety in their workplace.

Participants will gain a working knowledge of Hazard Identification and Management processes and the knowledge to undertake accident investigation processes.

Course Objectives -

This course will enable Health and Safety Representatives to increase their skills and experience in fostering a positive Health and Safety Culture and management practices, further identification of hazards / risks, how to raise awareness for employees and PCBU's and ways to discuss these in a positive environment.

Learning how to positively promote employee interests when harmed at work, including but not limited to return to work programmes, rehabilitation awareness and how to bridge the gap between employees and PCBU owners.
